Decorated manhole covers, fire hydrants and road traffic signs can be found around the town of Châlons-en-Champagne. They are not advertised, other than in a local newspaper report and on a Châlons Facebook page, which is strange as they would be a good tourist attraction for families; children could tick them off against a list as they find them. It took us ages to find out why they were decorated like this and it transpired that it was an initiative to get artists to work in the town to promote it!
Many of the pictures represent the trade carried out in the premises positioned next to the manhole. As at 21st April 2021 we have found 171 different examples. Apparently there are over 370 in total but many have been worn away by the passage of time and feet.
Where possible we have included a picture taken when the cover was first painted next to our pictures, which is especially helpful where ours are not clear. SOmetimes the artist freshens up an artwork and we have included some of these too.
